What Size Tankless Water Heater Do I Need?
The main advantage of traditional water heaters is that you can use hot water on multiple points simultaneously in your home. Apart from this advantage, all traditional water heaters have lots of disadvantages.
However, it won’t be a lacking of tankless ones if you install more than one unit in your home. But at first, you have to know your daily need and decide what size tankless water heater you need. Here, let me explain it to you in the simplest way possible.
The groundwater temperature is the most important parameter to consider. It means the input water temperature of the tankless water heater.
When you are looking for the best tankless water heater, you have to consider the lowest groundwater temperature in your area. Here, I have shown an average ground temperature in this chart. But try to know the lowest temperature in your area.
I am emphasizing this matter because the water heaters’ flow rate varies according to the input water temperature. Flow rates are described in the next point.
Note: The flow rates you see in the specifications are based on the highest temperature count.
You’ll see temperature consideration in two types. Some flow rates are in exact temperature e.g. input 60°F and output 100°F and some are in temperature rise e.g. 40°F rise. They both mean the same.

The hot water flow rate is the second most important factor to consider. If you don’t measure your required flow rate, you’ll experience a sandwich effect. The sandwich effect is the flow of cool water in between hot water. And trust me, you don’t want to have that.

How to measure GPM: Just hold a bottle at a particular point e.g. kitchen faucet or shower and run it for 10 seconds. Now measure the water level in the bottle, multiply it by 6, and you have the GPM flow rate of that outlet. Now, follow the same method for all household applications that need hot water.
The Size You Need
Now, I am going to sum it up about what size tankless water heater you should choose. You already know the input water temperature in your region and the GPM requirement in your home. Now, it is time to go shopping.
For example, the product you have chosen has the capability of 2 GPM at 70 degrees Fahrenheit in temperature rise. Or 2 GPM when the input temperature is 30°F and the output temperature you want is 100°F. Both mean the same.
Here, let’s assume that your requirement is at least 6 GPM at 30°F input water temperature. So, you will need 3 units of that particular model.
Are you thinking that it would cost too much? In that case, a little bit of compromising can solve the problem. Compromising how?
Say, you could continuously use two showers and two faucets with 3 heaters at 6 GPM. But you are able to buy one. You can compromise by using only one shower or two faucets at a time.

But it is not wise to choose according to your budget. Instead, I suggest that you choose considering all factors in my buying guide. No matter what the price is, you should choose the best tankless water heater that suits your situation perfectly.
After buying one, you can install the unit by yourself. That depends on how much complexity you can handle. Electric tankless water heaters are easier to install than gas ones. Doing everything by yourself will significantly keep the cost down.

Cost of Ventilation
Electric heaters don’t need venting because they don’t produce fumes. On the other hand, gas heaters need dedicated and sealed venting. They produce very hot fumes. If you install a low-quality vent system, it will be damaged.
But outdoor installation will be required no venting at all. For indoor venting, it can be horizontal or vertical, power-vent or direct-vent, metal or PVC.
- Horizontal or vertical venting means that the system is installed through the wall or roof. If you want horizontal venting, you’ll need a hole in the wall where the heater is mounted.
- For vertical venting, you’ll need a hole in your roof. You have to install a venting system from the wall it is mounted to the roof.
- Power venting means the unit will use indoor air for combustion. Its advantage is it uses only one pipe to vent the hot gas out. But it needs a minimum free space around it. In cold climates, it also can’t perform efficiently.
- Direct venting is a very good option. It doesn’t have disadvantages like power-vent. This method uses two ventilation pipes. One is for intake outdoor air and another is to vent exhaust gas out.
- There is a third option better than the power-vent and direct-vent. It’s called concentric venting. It’s like direct-venting but uses one pipe which has both intake and exhaust pipe separately integrated.
- About the pipe, it can be metal or PVC. Non-condensing Gas tankless unit produces very hot exhaust gas and it needs metal venting. But condensing ones reuse the exhaust gas for more efficiency and produce a lot less hot exhaust gas. This makes the venting a lot cheaper by using PVC pipes.
